Apraxia of Speech

(Speech & Mouth Coordination Difficulties)

What it is

A neurogenic motor speech disorder characterised by an impairment in the brain’s ability to plan, program, and sequence the precise motor commands necessary to move the lips, tongue, and jaw for speech production, completely independent of muscle weakness.

Clinical Characteristics

  • Visible or audible struggling (“groping”) movements of the mouth when trying to position the tongue or lips
  • Inconsistent speech sound errors on the exact same word
  • A disrupted, halting speech rhythm

What therapy can do

  • Motor Sequencing Training: Structured pacing strategies and systematic practice to help rebuild smooth motor sequencing in the mouth and support more natural speech movement.
