Aphasia

(Language & Communication Difficulties)

What it is

A language disorder caused by damage to the language areas of the brain, most often after a stroke or brain injury. It can affect speaking, understanding, reading and writing, while a person’s thinking and intelligence are usually not affected.

Clinical Characteristics

  • Difficulty finding the right word, or using the wrong word
  • Short or incomplete sentences, or fluent speech that is hard to follow
  • Difficulty understanding what others say, especially in longer conversations
  • Difficulty reading and writing

What therapy can do

  • Language Therapy: Structured exercises to support word-finding, sentence building and understanding, practised in everyday situations.
  • Communication Strategies: Practical ways for patients and families to communicate, such as gestures, writing, pictures and simple cues.
