Dysarthria

(Slurred or Weak Speech)

What it is

A motor speech disorder caused by central or peripheral nervous system damage that weakens, slows, or disrupts coordination in the muscles responsible for respiration, voice production (phonation), and articulation.

Clinical Characteristics

  • Slurred, imprecise, or muffled consonant pronunciation
  • A breathy, strained, or quiet vocal quality
  • Rapid or trailing speech rates
  • Difficulty being understood in everyday conversations

What therapy can do

  • Motor Speech & Voice Training: Targeted exercises to support vocal loudness, breath support and lip and tongue strength.
  • Articulatory Precision Training: Practising clear speech sound placement with pacing techniques, to help speech be easier to understand in everyday conversation.
